Easter Island

The people of Easter Island are of polynesian descent and are called the Rapanui, most well known for their huge sculptures of heads. Their arrival date is still disputed, but is estimated at 700 - 900 AD. The population seems to have grown between arrival and 1400 at which point it might have been 25 000. During their growth, the Rapanui consumed large amounts of their natural resources, especially trees, until there were none left. This caused a great deal of problems for them, and was a major cause for their downfall. This wasn't their only issue though, they also had many hostile encounters with Europeans in the 1800s. The rest of their intriguing and mystical history shall be revealed as you read on.
